Beginning in 1940, Germans established ghettos in occupied Poland - sealed off districts for the Jewish population. Outside these ghettos was the so called  Aryan side. The Nazis sentenced the Jews to extermination. They were rounded up and taken away to death camps. To save themselves, some ran away from the liquidated ghettos and sought refuge on the "Aryan side".
