On December 1st, 2010 at the temporary seat of the Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw (13 Mazowiecka Street) was held a meeting with a group of 24 students from Poland, Spain, Germany, Sweden and Turkey.

The meeting, part of the project “Polish Righteous – Recalling Forgotten History”, was moderated by Joanna Król, who presented to the students the “Virtual exhibition”, created for the project “Righteous in Polish Schools”.

The participants of the meeting got to know the story of the Righteous Stanisława Roztropowicz-Szkubel and the part of the “Virtual exhibition” devoted to hiding places. The students were also able to learn more about the project “Polish Righteous – Recalling Forgotten History”.

The students came to Poland as part of the Comenius program, devoted to subjects such as tolerance, racism and xenophobia. The school in Kołbiel, which they will visit during their stay in Poland – is organizing “The Day of the Righteous”as part of the program “Righteous in Polish Schools”.

As a result of the project, 45 interviews with Righteous Among the Nations have been conducted. Several dozen of unique video recordings and hundreds of archival photos have been gathered. Most of the materials are available on the website www.sprawiedliwi.org.pl

During the project, we have encouraged teachers to organize in their schools “The Day of the Righteous”, which could take the form of a meeting with the Righteous, a project carried out by the students or a “visit” of the virtual exhibition.

The main goal was to motivate the students to meet an unknown hero, often a close neighbor. The ideas for “The Day of the Righteous” were born during the October training for teachers

The virtual exhibition presented to the students will be used as an educational tool in the project. It presents the stories of the Righteous illustrated by short films, the multimedia presentation “Faces of the Righteous”, as well as photos and drawings of hiding places where Jews were living. The exhibition is supplemented by sets of exercises for students.

The project is financially supported by the Governmental Program – Civic Initiatives Fund. It is co-financed by the Ministry of Polish Culture and Heritage. This project is financially supported by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland as part of the Promoting Knowledge About Poland program.
