It was founded in 1985. Its members are Polish citizens who have been honored with the title and medal of Righteous Among the Nations. The goals of the society are to disseminate information about the occupation, the Holocaust and the actions of the Righteous, and to fight against anti-Semitism and xenophobia. One of the central components of their work is to meet with young people and to talk to them about the occupation and their personal roles during those years. Members of the Society also take part in meeting with youth in Israel. They are invited to attend ceremonies and lectures; they work together with people who participated in other types of combat activities. The Society is funded by modest collections from its members, whose numbers continue to decline.

In the years 1991-2008 Jerzy Śliwczyński was the President of the Society, while the vice-presidents were: Irena Hamerska and Jadwiga Wolf; members of the Board: Julian Szklarski and Alicja Borkowska; secretary Zbigniew Mańkowski and treasurer Janusz Czupryniak.

At their organizational and election meeting on August 8, 2008 the members of the Society voted on a new directing body for the organization. Anna Stupnicka-Bando became the new president, while the vice-presidents are: Stanisław Świerczewski and Józef Walaszczyk, the treasurer Janusz Czupryniak and the secretary Alicja Schnepf.
