The Righteous
Stefania Wójcik, née Sadlak was born during the war, in 1944.
Her family – parents and grandparents lived in Siennica Nadolna near Krasnystaw. Mrs. Wójcik’s mother was already married, despite her young age – she was around 18. Her parents’ house was located just about one kilometer from the grandparents’ place.
The girl who was hidden
Mrs. Wójcik’s grandparents hid for a month a Jewish girl. Her name was Michael Abramowicz and she came from Chełm. She had managed to flee from a transitory camp for the Jews – either in Chełm or in Borek near Chełm, where she had been transported with her mother and sisters. Somebody advised her to contact Mr. Jan Wrona, who didn’t hesitate to accept the girl.
Hiding the Jewish girl
They called her Janinka right away on the first they of her stay. After a month of hiding at the Wrona family house, and until the end of the war, she was sheltered by Stefania's mother. She had to move because there were many people coming to Maria and Jan’s house – some of them because they had fish ponds with carps and people from town were coming to buy the fish.
When endangered, the girl would hide by the lakes or meadows in the area, sometimes not returning for several days. Usually, however, she behaved like a family member and slept in the house, not in any hideout. Luckily, no strangers came to the Sadłak's place.
After the war
Despite Stefania’s mother trying to persuade her to stay at their place, Michael decided to emigrate. She lives in Germany. She had lived in Israel, and had married a jeweller, but her husband died soon.
The relatives of the Righteous and Michael are still in touch by mail. In 1972, she came to visit those who had helped her in Poland. At that time, everybody was still alive – Stefania’s grandparents and parents. She also visited the archives in search for her relatives’ names, but she found no trace.
In 1994, Stefania Wójcik received the medal “The Righteous Among the Nations”, posthumously awarded to her grandparents and parents.
