Story of Rescue

September 2010, Wirtualny Sztetl

Helena Barcikowska lived in Wiśniowiec during the World War II. At the end of September 1942, she sheltered Adam Gajł, who escaped from Nazis and left Warsaw in 1939. In September 1943, Helena obtained a fake birth certificate from a local priest. They headed west together, escaping the Soviet Front. In October 1943, they reached Łańcut via Brody and Lwów. Adam obtained a fake documents for a different name, pursuant to his birth certificate. He reached the end of the World War II. Helena Barcikowska’s report reads as follows: “A gendarme once burst into my flat. We had no special hiding place for Adam, he used to hide anywhere – behind a wardrobe or under bedding (if it was necessary). One night a gendarme entered the room where Adam had hidden behind a wardrobe. There was no light in the room, so the gendarme turned on a torch. A second before the light could reach Adam, the bulb had died. The Nazi went to the kitchen to replace the bulb. He did not come back.”
