Story of Rescue

August 2010, Jakub Jaskółowski

Seweryna Gontarczyk was born on February 13, 1929 in Wólka Komaszycka near Poniatowa.

During the war her parents were giving shelter to a few young Jewish tailors and an elderly carpenter. Very often they also allowed other families that needed some help, to stay over in their house and provided them with food.

When the round-ups started, the Jews left. Soon afterwards, they were caught and slaughtered by the Nazis.

She also recalls how when she was a young girl, her mother would sent her to the camp in Poniatowa with food for the prisoners. Most Poles however, gave food to Jews in exchange for money and gold, and when the camp was closed down, people living in the neighborhood went there to dig for money, gold and golden teeth. Since the locals used to find gold there, they called the place ”Colorado".
