Story of Rescue

Transkrypcja

When Doctor Bloch, that is Michał, arrived, he was crying. I asked him: ‘What happened, doctor?’ He was the head of the hospital, a surgeon and a very prominent figure. ‘What happened?’ (...) ‘Our village is already burning!’ – he answered. ‘My family is still there.’ The whole family: two children, an elder daughter and a younger son, and wife and husband – the whole family. The village was on fire. I said: ‘But what can I do? My husband is out, I cannot decide for myself.’ Four people? (...) So they waited in the forest, and at night they came back to us. I mean: to the place where I lived. They stayed with us for so many months. I could not watch his tears. Such a prominent figure, the head of the county hospital, and such a good surgeon. I felt sorry for him, he could later save people. (...) They wanted bread and they craved for soup, so I cooked for them in two pots. The smell was very intense, and my neighbors would often come and visit me. I tried to explain to them why I was cooking one soup, while the second was already waiting ready. So when someone knocked at the door, I lied that it was water boiling, which I needed to wash up the dishes or to prepare a quail. (...) Later my neighbors were amazed at how I could hide the Jews so well that they did not know about anything, did not notice anything. Well, if they had, I would not be here now!
